Sex addiction and Love/Relationship addiction, are two separate intimacy disorders that need specialized attention.
Love/Relationships:
Love addiction is very real, and more common than you would think. A love addict is constantly seeking new and intoxicating “whirlwind romances” and the excitement of “falling in love”. They focus on and fantasize about another person and believe that they are pursuing real, lasting love, when in fact they are chasing a rush of endorphins similar to the effects of drugs like cocaine. Once they have obtained the object of their pursuit and the intensity and newness of the romance is gone, the love addict will begin seeking someone else. And because the love addict can’t stand the pain of being alone, there will usually be a history of cheating and affairs. Here is a list of common Characteristics of a Love Addict.
Sex:
Sex addiction is characterized by a constant need to engage in sexual behaviors. These behaviors can range from excessive use of pornography to searching for multiple partners, prostitutes and escorts. Desire for sex is a normal, natural human behavior, and our brains reward us for it because we’re built to reproduce. The stimulation from sex gives you the same level of excitement you would get from a drug like cocaine. Unfortunately, seeking sex can become a life-draining obsession because of its natural rewards, and can lead to feelings of intense shame and self-loathing.
Though I have treated sex addiction in female clients and will always assist those in need of help, I do not specialize in sex addiction. If you are more comfortable seeking help from a certified professional, or are interested in attending sex addiction support groups, please reach out today! There are several certified male and female Certified Sex Addiction Therapists (CSAT) in the Houston area, as well as the Houston chapter of Sex Addicts Anonymous.
